How to Apply for SASSA Grants and Check Your Status in South Africa

Applying for a SASSA grant can feel confusing — different grants, different documents, and a status check that never seems to update. But once you know which channel to use for each grant, the process is straightforward and free. Here is exactly how to apply for the main SASSA grants, the documents you need, and how to check your status and payment dates without queuing at an office.

SRD R370 Grant: Apply and Check Online

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is the quickest to apply for because it is fully online — no office visit needed:

• Apply on the official portal — go to srd.sassa.gov.za and use your South African ID number and a working cellphone number registered in your name. The application is free.
• Confirm your details — capture your name, ID, contact number and consent so SASSA can verify your income against bank and government records.
• Add your banking details — submit your own bank account so payment goes straight to you; avoid using someone else’s account, as it can delay or block your money.
• Check status monthly — your SRD outcome is decided each month, so log back in to see whether you are approved, pending or declined for that period.

Older Persons Grant: Apply at a SASSA Office

The Older Persons grant (the old-age pension) is applied for in person, but you can prepare everything in advance:

• Who qualifies — South African citizens, permanent residents or refugees aged 60 and over who pass the income and asset means test.
